Department Honours Women

12 September 2008

The Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works hosted a glittering women awards ceremony at the Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto. The department organised the awards to honour women in transport, construction, technical fields and those in entrepreneurship. The awards represented one of the highlights of the departmental celebration of the August women month.

Themed "Basadi ba na le bokgoni" meaning, women have capacity. The awards were hosted to honour, not only, those in transport and construction industry but to honour also, women who motivate and also lead their counterparts in the implementation of programmes and projects aimed at bringing about fundamental social change in respective communities where our government seeks to address historical imbalances.

Delivering his speech the Gauteng MEC of Transport, Roads and Works, Mr. Ignatius Jacobs, acknowledged the good work women do in the society. "We gather today to honour the dedication, diligence, strength, wisdom and courage of the women of our province in the reconstruction and development of our country as well as seek to bring about a better life for all. In addition, Jacobs encouraged black women to partner with fellow white women in transport and construction industry to meet ideals of the 1956 women who marched to the Union Buildings.
