A call to participate in the 2008 Best Women Awards

The Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works will host the best women awards ceremony on 11 September 2008 at the Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown. The theme of the event is "Basadi ba na le bokgoni" meaning, women have capacity.
The ceremony represents one of the highlights of the departmental celebration of the August women month. Organisations in the public transport and construction industry will partner the department in hosting the best women awards ceremony.
The objectives of the awards are:
- To recognize and highlight the best women performers within the department as well as in the public transport and construction industries;
- To motivate and encourage women to aspire to be the best in whatever they do;
- To showcase qualities and talents of women; and
- To launch the Departmental Gender Policy.
All staff and stakeholders are encouraged to note the changes in the Women's Awards categories. Staff members and stakeholders who had already submitted their nominations are requested to re-send using the new nomination form which is attached.
The following are the new categories:
Best Branch or Entity in the Empowerment of Women: This category is open to a branch or entity that reflects compliance to the Employment Equity targets by employing more women across all levels but more importantly on middle and senior management. This branch or entity has to support the empowerment of women on all spectrum i.e. skills development, mentorship and coaching etc
Best Women Manager: This nominee is someone who is a senior manager, and not afraid of being at the forefront. She is able to influence others and freely displays the feminine leadership qualities without pressure of the masculine type of management. She endeavors to uplift other women and supports the gender agenda. She has less number of audit queries and submits reports timorously as required. She is able to balance work and family life.
Best Team-Player: This nominee is an employee who is driven by the vision of her team and has the interest of her team at heart, giving less attention to her own personal interest. She is someone who evokes a positive spirit in others and encourages them. She instills a sense of hope, helps colleagues overcome their own obstacles and strive to want to do better. She is result -orientated and endeavors to render an excellent service. She lives by the Batho Pele and Ubuntu principles.
Best Public Transport Structure in the Empowerment of women : This category is open to any public transport structures in the Gauteng province that has made strides in the advancement of women i.e. involvement of women in leadership or decision making positions. The structure must further give opportunities and support the development of women in the transport industry.
Best Women Public Transport Operator: This nominee is someone who manages her own business and is thriving well in the transport industry. She functions well in a male dominated environment and is not discouraged easily. She participates actively and makes positive contributions to the public of transport industry/ or structures. She stands up for her rights and is assertive.
Best Women in Construction: This nominee is someone who is successful in the construction industry and manages her own company that is above Contractors Industrial Development Board (CIDB) level 4. She excels in her work and is able to stick to timelines of projects that she undertakes rendering quality services. She is able to empower and uplift other women to succeed.
Best Women Professional in the Construction Industry: This nominee is someone who is a qualified employee or consultant working as a surveyor, technician, electrical engineer, architect, civil and structural engineer, quality surveyor or mechanical engineer. She has to display good performance and ability to thrive well in a male dominated environment.
Best Emerging Women Company in the Construction Industry: This category is open to emerging women owned Construction Company. The company has to be below CIDB level 3. The company has to display a success history in work on sub contracting i.e. service excellence and sticking to time lines.
Best Women Artisan: This nominee is someone who is involved in roles/jobs that were dominated by males namely: plumbing, electrician, brick layer, painters, grader driver, paving, tiling, and welding. She has to display qualities of good performance and excellence in her job as well as good working relations with male colleagues .
Staff and stakeholders are encouraged to nominate deserving women for the awards as outlined in each category. The closing date for nominations is 08 September 2008 at 12:00.
